Full body scanners at airports could increase your risk of skin cancer, experts warn.

The X-ray machines have been brought in at Manchester, Gatwick and Heathrow.

But scientists say radiation from the scanners has been underestimated and could be particularly risky for children.

They say that the low level beam does deliver a small dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin – one of the most radiation-sensitive organs of the human body – that dose may be up to 20 times higher than first estimated.

Dr David Brenner, head of Columbia University’s centre for radiological research, said although the danger posed to the individual passenger is ‘very low’, he is urging researchers to carry out more tests on the device to look at the way it affects specific groups who could be more sensitive to radiation.

He says children and passengers with gene mutations – around one in 20 of the population – are more at risk as they are less able to repair X-ray damage to their DNA.

Federal Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl has accepted a “charter of forgiveness” from members of the aboriginal community as part of the healing process for survivors of Canada’s residential schools.

Chief Kenny Blacksmith presented the charter Saturday at the National Forgiven Summit, a conference of Aboriginal Peoples in Ottawa.

The charter was signed by elders and survivors, as well as young people, who said that the damage from residential schools is intergenerational.

It stems from Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s apology two years ago for previous government policies of assimilation. Standing in the House of Commons, Harper apologized on behalf of the government and asked for “forgiveness of the Aboriginal Peoples of this country for failing them so profoundly.”

Blacksmith, a residential school survivor and former deputy grand chief of the Grand Council of the Crees of Quebec, said that “at that moment, the onus was placed on our people as individuals to respond.”

Autistic Boy Charged With Making Terrorist Threats Over Stick-Figure Sketch

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Oh, it’s a sad state of affairs when the wee lads can’t even draw guns and swords in their school books anymore. One might hope this was some social engineer’s idea of a practical joke. But no. It’s a terror charge levied against some little autistic kid for a sketch. (Meanwhile, they appear to be studying ‘The Outsiders’.) Terror – it’s everywhere, man. Well, we’ve known all along that the Patriot Act and its various analogues throughout the West are really for use in controlling domestic populations – not people from the Middle East, that was just the first phase of your conditioning. Stay gold, Ponyboy.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. – A fourteen-year-old autistic boy is facing terrorist charges after a sketch he made in school.

The sketch shows two stick-figures. One of them is labeled ‘Me’ and is shown shooting a gun at another with a teacher’s name above it.

Karen Finn says that her son, 8th grader Shane Finn, doesn’t understand why he is in trouble. She says the boy is autistic and has the mental capacity of a 3rd grader.

Officials at Ridgeview Charter School say the student will face a tribunal and is being charged with making terrorist threats.

Finn says she plans to fight the charges.

Elite Bishop College a ‘Place That Destroyed Children’

Former Bishop’s College students — plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit — describe the elite private school in the 1950s and ’60s as a house of horrors and dirty secrets, where a culture of abuse reigned unchecked

MONTREAL — Students and alumni of Bishop’s College School are generally regarded as members of a privileged class. For some, however, the privilege of a BCS education came at a terrible price. Not in fees, but in shocking, soul-eroding, life-wrecking abuse visited on them there. Long buried, their memories of Bishop’s school days of yore have lately risen to haunt the esteemed institution.

It has long been one of Canada’s elite private schools, founded in 1836, a year before Queen Victoria ascended the throne and three decades before Confederation. It sits in splendid baronial style on 350 bucolic Eastern Townships acres at Lennoxville. Its accoutrements include the country’s oldest continuous cadet corps, affiliated with the Black Watch.

It has been the prep school for the scions of some of Montreal’s finest old families. It has produced graduates distinguished in an array of fields. They include early last-century magnate Sir Montagu Allan and later last-century newspaper tycoon Conrad Black; author Michael Ondaatje and moviemaker Paul Almond; two senators, the late Hartland Molson and current Colin Kenny; celebrated radio raconteur Stuart McLean; inventor Reginald Fessenden, who pioneered radio transmission, and Scott Abbott, who invented Trivial Pursuit.

For others, their BCS “education” put them on a downward life path, to alcoholism, drug abuse, psychological disorder, failed relationships and career instability. Their lately rendered accounts of sexual abuse at the hands of an ordained faculty member and rampant corporal punishment — routine floggings on bared backsides with canes, steel-edged rulers and hockey sticks — echo recent tales of abuse in Catholic parishes and Indian Residential Schools, as well as other upper-crust schools, including Montreal’s Selwyn House and Toronto’s Upper Canada College.

Government won’t identify entity or reason for challenge to proposed designation of controversial chemical

Two years after the federal government announced with great fanfare that it would designate bisphenol A as a toxic substance, the plastic-making chemical still isn’t on the list and there is no indication when it will be.

The reason for the delay, The Globe and Mail has learned, is that an entity filed a formal notice of objection to the listing last summer. The government won’t identify the entity or reveal the reasons for the objection.

“The notice of objection is under consideration,” the department said in an e-mailed statement. “A final order to add bisphenol A to the list of toxic substances … has not yet been published.”

The estrogen-like chemical is used to produce everything from CDs to the liners of nearly all tin cans, and Canada — amid scientific disputes over its impact on people’s health and the environment — was the first country in the world to propose declaring it a toxic substance.

That designation could have international ramifications because both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration have recently announced that they are conducting reviews on the safety of the chemical.

The government’s BPA decision has been opposed by the American Chemistry Council, an Arlington, Va.-based association that represents makers of the material and maintains that it poses no health or environmental risks.

China To Coercively Sterilise 10,000 To Curb Births

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

This is being pushed in the Western world as well. If you don’t want to live in Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’, you might want to start letting people know you’re against it, doing your part to resist the resurgent agenda of the eco-fascists. The West has already been to this dark place, and there’s no need to go there again.

Health authorities are planning to sterilise nearly 10,000 people in southern China over the next four days as part of a population control programme.

Some of the people in Puning City will be forced to have the procedure carried out against their will.

Amnesty International says forced sterilisation “amounts to torture”.

Reports in the Chinese media say that Puning Health authorities in Guangdong Province have launched a special campaign to sterilise people who already have at least one child in order to ensure local birth control quotas are met.

Chinese newspaper reports say that those who refuse to be sterilised have seen their elderly mothers or fathers taken away and detained.

Hundreds of people in Puning are said to have been locked up.

Kate Allen, Director of Amnesty International UK, said: “It is appalling that the authorities are subjecting people to such an invasive procedure against their will.

Pope seen making ‘clean sweep’ as disgraced bishops go

VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI, by accepting the resignations of bishops implicated in child sex abuse cases, is showing he wants to make a “clean sweep” as the Roman Catholic Church tries to recover from months of scandal, Vatican experts say.

On Friday, the pope allowed the bishop of Bruges, in Belgium, to take early retirement.

Roger Vangheluwe, 73, admitted to sexually abusing a minor several years ago, becoming the first bishop directly implicated as a predator cleric since a wave of scandals involving priests began sweeping Europe and the Americas in November.

The day before, the pope accepted the resignation of Irish Bishop James Moriarty, also 73, named in a damning report that found Catholic authorities in the Dublin archdiocese concealed abuse of children by priests for decades.

Moriarty was the fourth bishop to be allowed to resign over the scandals in Ireland.

Such resignations before the normal retirement age of 75 are allowed by canon law in case of incapacitating illness or other unspecified “serious reasons”.

The Psychiatric Drugging of Children: Inventing Disorders

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Between the effects of hormone-laden water and plastic products and the psychosis produced in some by these childhood mood ‘stabilizers’, you have to wonder what the effects of this chemical twisting will be on future generations.

Evelyn Pringle, Counterpunch.org
April 21, 2010

Of all the harmful actions of modern psychiatry, “the mass diagnosing and drugging of children is the most appalling with the most serious consequences for the future of individual lives and for society,” warns the world-renowned expert, Dr Peter Breggin, often referred to as the “Conscience of Psychiatry.”

“We’re bringing up a generation in this country in which you either sit down, shut up and do what you’re told, or you get diagnosed and drugged,” he points out.

Breggin considers the situation to be “a national tragedy.” “To inflict these drugs on the growing brains of infants and children is wrong and abusive,” he contends.

The kids who get drugged are often our best, brightest, most exciting and energetic children, he points out. “In the long run, we are giving children a very bad lesson that drugs are the answer to emotional problems.”

The system that Lower Merion school officials used to track lost and stolen laptops wound up secretly capturing thousands of images, including photographs of students in their homes, Web sites they visited, and excerpts of their online chats, says a new motion filed in a suit against the district.

More than once, the motion asserts, the camera on Robbins’ school-issued laptop took photos of Robbins as he slept in his bed. Each time, it fired the images off to network servers at the school district.

Back at district offices, the Robbins motion says, employees with access to the images marveled at the tracking software. It was like a window into “a little LMSD soap opera,” a staffer is quoted as saying in an e-mail to Carol Cafiero, the administrator running the program.

“I know, I love it,” she is quoted as having replied.

Those details, disclosed in the motion filed late Thursday in federal court by Robbins’ attorney, offer a wider glimpse into the now-disabled program that spawned Robbins’ lawsuit and has shined an international spotlight on the district.

In the filing, the Penn Valley family claims the district’s records show that the controversial tracking system captured more than 400 photos and screen images from 15-year-old Blake Robbins’ school-issued laptop during two weeks last fall, and that “thousands of webcam pictures and screen shots have been taken of numerous other students in their homes.”

Police stunned, slapped unruly boy at Indiana daycare

Two police officers called to a central Indiana home daycare to subdue an unruly 10-year-old boy have been suspended after one used a stun gun on the child and another slapped him in the mouth.

The child suffered no significant injuries in the incident, which happened Tuesday.

Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the confrontation in Martinsville is being investigated.

Martinsville police Chief Jon Davis said he believed the two officers could have restrained the 94-pound boy without using force. Davis said the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department was investigating and an internal review was planned on the officer’s use of the conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a Taser.

“We need to look at it a lot closer because it’s not really made for 10-year-olds,” he said at a news conference Thursday.
