With much media fanfare, 9 members of a Michigan militia were arrested last March and charged with “seditious conspiracy”—specifically, plotting to murder law enforcement officers. Ostensibly, this was supposed to precipitate some kind of wholesale revolt against the government. Question: Have any of you heard anyone from the propaganda press corps (national news media) tell you what has been happening with this case? No? Did you not wonder why? Well, I’ll tell you why: the case has fallen apart.

The first indication of the Feds’ case going bad was a local report in the Toledo (Ohio) Blade, dated April 28, 2010. “An FBI agent who led the investigation of nine Michigan militia members charged with trying to launch war against the federal government couldn’t recall many details of the two-year probe yesterday during questioning by defense lawyers.

“Even the judge who must decide whether to release the nine until trial was puzzled.

“‘I share the frustrations of the defense team . . . that she doesn’t know anything,’ U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts said after agent Leslie Larsen confessed she hadn’t reviewed her notes recently and couldn’t remember specific details of the case.”

Earlier this week, the International Red Cross confirmed the existence of a secret “Black Jail” within the Bagram prison complex in Afghanistan, where high-value detainees were held and allegedly abused. Since then, additional details have continued to emerge.

The New York Times reported last November that former prisoners and human rights researchers had described how prisoners were held at the facility for weeks at a time without being allowed outside contact. The BBC also obtained accounts from prisoners who said they had been subjected to isolation, sleep deprivation, and cold.

The American vice admiral in charge of detainees, however, continued to deny both the existence of a separate facility and the allegations of abuse until the International Red Cross confirmed the claims.

Now The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder has been able to paint a clearer picture of the facility. His sources tell him that it is run by the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Defense Counterintelligence and Human Intelligence Center (DCHC), whose operatives perform the interrogations on behalf of a subunit of the”elite counter-terrorism brigade” known as Task Force 714.

Task Force 714 was formerly commanded by General Stanley McChrystal, who now leads US forces in Afghanistan. According to Ambinder, DCHC is a “relatively new organization,” which absorbed many of the previous functions and staff of the Counterintelligence Field Activity after CIFA was accused of spying on American political groups and was implicated in the Duke Cunningham scandal.

Renowned financial commentator denounces “fiscal fascism” in Telegraph

Several more autocratic international voices have added their weight behind proposals to vastly empower the EU with greater authority to govern over nation states in Europe, in the wake of the sovereign debt crisis. Meanwhile, one leading commentator has described the move as “fiscal fascism”.

Proposals tabled yesterday by the European Commission, the legislative arm of the EU, would greatly diminish the ability of nation states to set their own fiscal policies, in favour of a move toward a centralized european treasury.

“There is still a long way to go. We have opened the gate. Now we have yet to go through it,” said Ulrike Guerot, an analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations think-tank.

“The crisis has shown us we need to animate moves toward closer political union as well as monetary union and we need a quantitative jump.” Guerot added in comments to Reuters.

“The EU has used crises in the past to make that kind of jump and this is what is needed now.” the German researcher concluded.

“This could be the fuel injection needed to put Europe on course toward closer political and economic union, the goal that drove its founding fathers and leaders a generation ago such as Germany’s Helmut Kohl, France’s Francois Mitterrand and former European Commission President Jacques Delors.” notes Reuters writer Timothy Heritage.

The European CFR is a vehemently pro-EU outfit made up of hundreds of influential corporate and political figures, perhaps most notably including George Soros. It was initiated three years ago primarily to push for an expanded role for the EU as a global superpower. Inevitably, the group is consistently vocal when it comes to the question of greater political integration in Europe.

It’s based on a new regulatory framework called SeMS or Security Management Systems, and may be worth ploughing through to see what’s in the fine print. And this new three-stage alarm system: It will be interesting to see, should this go through, how often we’re informed in the future that airports are on a Level 2 ‘ increased risk of a probable incident’ alert.

Update (2010/05/15): The next day, two CF-18s scrambled from CFB Comox to escort a passenger liner from Hong Kong to the airport over some form of bomb threat the details of which are not clear at this time.

Changes ‘long overdue’: security expert

Transport Canada is looking to implement a three-level security alert system at major airports across the country to address “higher risk” conditions, CBC News has learned.

The proposal, outlined in the Canada Gazette, the official newspaper of the Government of Canada, calls on airports to run their operations according to:

• Level 1: normal operations.
• Level 2: increased risk of a probable incident.
• Level 3: an incident is imminent or underway.

Unlike the alert system in the United States, the public will not automatically be notified when threat levels change. Instead, alerting the public would be “considered on a case by case basis,” Transport Canada told CBC News.

The proposed changes were first suggested more than four years ago in a report, tabled in Parliament, which raised serious concerns about a lack of coordination between aviation security agencies.

MADRID – President Nicolas Sarkozy threatened to pull France out of the euro currency group to force Germany to help Greece with its debt crisis, El Pais newspaper reported Friday, quoting Spain’s prime minister.

Spain, France and Germany all denied the report, but it increased investors’ concerns over the euro single currency, which plunged to an 18-month low on Friday.

El Pais, which is close to Spain’s ruling Socialist Party, said Sarkozy made the threat at a Brussels summit of EU leaders last week that sealed a rescue package for Athens.

Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, has been the most reluctant euro nation to help the Greek government.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero reported Sarkozy’s remarks to a meeting of leaders of his Socialist Party on Wednesday, El Pais said.

The French president demanded “a commitment by everyone, for everyone to help Greece, each according to his means or France would reexamine its situation in the euro,” Zapatero was quoted as saying.

“Sarkozy banged his fist on the table and threatened to withdraw from the euro, which twisted the arm of Angela Merkel,” the German chancellor, a Socialist official who heard Zapatero’s account was quoted as saying.

The Brussels summit finally sealed a 110-billion-euro (140-billion-dollar) three-year package of loans and credit guarantees for Greece, which had risked defaulting on its huge debts. (more…)

The ‘al-Qaeda’ mujahideen are of the Sunni branch of Islam, and this internal dichotomy within the religion (which splits along a dispute over the legitimacy of theocratic lineage) is one of the primary weaknesses in the region that allows groups like the Sunni militants to be manipulated by Western intelligence – eg; in the US-funded Al-CIAda attacks on Shia-dominated Iran that Seymour Hersh has been covering.

As former US diplomat to Afghanistan Matthew Hoh pointed out, Afghanistan is essentially embroiled in civil war, a result of Western presence. Ditto for Pakistan. Ditto, it seems, for Iraq. One of the long-term US strategies that has been floated by the Council on Foreign Relations is to break Iraq into three parts – Sunni, Shia, and Kurd. Divide and conquer is one of the oldest tricks in the book, and the British tried the same sort of Balkanization in the region as well during the second Anglo-Afghan war.

Al-Qaeda’s new leader in Iraq warned Shias on Friday that “dark days soaked with blood” lie ahead and that a new campaign of attacks was under way.

Within hours of the warning, a car bomb exploded outside a Shia mosque south of Baghdad just after Friday prayers, wounding 20 worshippers as they were leaving, according to local police.

Only days before the warning, Iraq was wracked by the worst attack this year, a series of co-ordinated bombings and assassinations that killed 119 people – most of them Shias and members of the security forces – across 10 cities.

The Iraqi insurgent umbrella group, the Islamic State of Iraq, named al-Nasser Lideen Allah Abu Suleiman as its new minister of war, replacing the Egyptian Abu Ayyub al-Masri, killed in a U.S.-Iraqi military strike on a safe house in April. The ISI counts al-Qaeda as one of its member groups.

“Wait for the long gloomy nights and dark days soaked with blood,” said Abu Suleiman, addressing Iraq’s “polytheistic rejecters,” an insulting term for Shias common among extremist Sunnis. “What is happening to you nowadays is just a drizzle.” The written message was posted on militant websites Friday. The economic takedown of Greece and its after-effects have backed Sarkozy and Merkel into a political corner. Naturally, they’re entrenching, as are European banks. The article Behind the panic: Financial warfare over the future of global bank power, written by F. William Engdahl over at Global Research in 2008, may be illuminating under the circumstances. In it, he quotes a senior European banker as saying, ‘There is an all-out war going on between the United States and the EU to define the future face of European banking.’ That was in Oct 2008.

‘There’s this overwhelming belief now in Europe that if we legislate first, then the U.S. will follow what we do.’

European countries led by France and Germany plan to push through controversial hedge fund regulations next week after turning down British pleas to defer a vote in Brussels.

The refusal by Paris and Berlin to delay a decision on the new rules, which are opposed by the U.K., has set up a bruising early confrontation with David Cameron’s new government.

“The Americans are going absolutely ape,” said a person involved in the negotiations. “There’s this overwhelming belief now in Europe that if we legislate first, then the US will follow what we do.”

British diplomats tried on Wednesday to persuade Paris and Berlin that Mr. Cameron’s coalition — including George Osborne, his chancellor of the exchequer — needed more time to prepare for Tuesday’s meeting of European Union finance ministers.

Police began installing 77 more closed circuit security cameras around downtown Toronto Friday in preparation for the upcoming G20 summit.

They will remain up and in use until “the completion of the event, when there’s no longer an issue of security,” said Toronto police Const. Wendy Drummond.

The cameras are “similar to other ones we’ve deployed in the past,” Drummond said. “They’re going to be very recognizable. They will be clearly marked with ‘police’ on them.”

Drummond said the installations will occur over the next few weeks, with the first cameras going up Friday along Adelaide St. The exact locations will be disclosed to the public once they are installed, Drummond said.

Police will use the CCTV cameras to record and “relay visual information about an event unfolding in a given area over time.”

OTTAWA – MPs have averted a parliamentary showdown by reaching an all-party agreement on access to uncensored Afghan detainee documents that leaves the final call on what to make public up to a panel of eminent jurists.

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson announced the agreement in the Commons after the daily question period on Friday as the clock ticked down to a 1:30 p.m. ET deadline set by Speaker Peter Milliken late last month.

The deal, lauded by all parties as a “victory” for parliamentary democracy, means MPs will not have the threat of an election hanging over their heads as they begin a week-long break. If no deal had been reached, Milliken could have found the government in contempt of Parliament, possibly triggering an election.

Nicholson praised the agreement as one that “doesn’t compromise national security” or “jeopardize” the lives of Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

He outlined details of the agreement in the Commons. The deal was sealed after more than two weeks of negotiations.

DUBLIN, Ireland–Trilateral Commission (TC) members, angry over their failure to establish a world government and the economic crisis they generated, called for war with Iran when they gathered behind closed doors here in Dublin, Ireland May 7-10.

War plans were revealed by Mikhail Slobodovsici, a chief adviser to the Russian leadership, when he strolled off the grounds of the Four Seasons resort, where TC had hunkered down behind armed guards and locked doors. He thought he was talking to a TC colleague when speaking with Alan Keenan, who operates the web site WeAreChange.org.

“We are deciding the future of the world,” Slobodovsici said. “We need a world government,” he said, but, referring to Iran, said “we need to get rid of them.”

Clearly, it was a TC war call. Many of the TC’s billionaires and millionaires are heavily invested in manufacturing, and wars produce huge profits.

Suddenly, Slobodovsici noticed that Keenan’s nametag was different from the TC label and said: “I can’t talk–we operate under Chatham House rules.”
