GM and Honda adding shifts at Ontario plants
There are clear signs that Ontario’s auto industry is recovering after a hitting low point early last year, but experts say it will probably never employ as many people as it once did.
Honda Canada Inc. last week announced plans to add a second production shift to its Plant 2 facility in Alliston, Ont., a move that would create 400 jobs in 2011.
At the same time, GM said it will recall about 600 laid-off workers at its Oshawa assembly plant, moving to three shifts from two in October.
All 127 laid-off employees at GM’s plant in Ingersoll will be recalled next week, and the company will recall 158 employees laid off from other plants in Windsor, St. Catharines and Woodstock.
“It’s is good news, no doubt about it. But to put it into perspective, it’s not going to reach the levels where we were previously,” said Carlos Gomes, auto industry analyst with Scotiabank.
Gomes said that, five or six years ago, 150,000 people in Ontario worked in the auto industry, but now only 100,000 have jobs.
Autoworker Jim McAuliffe, who just got his job back on a GM assembly line in Oshawa, agrees with Gomes.
“My view is the auto industry is always going to have a footprint in Canada, but I don’t think its going to be to the extent that it once was,” McAuliffe said.
Worker hopes for a few more years on the line
He said he’s glad he has only a few years left before retiring.
“It’s peace of mind. I need to work another four and a half years approximately, and then I’ve got my 30 years, and then I can retire and then move on with my life,” he said.
Chris Buckley is president of Canadian Auto Workers Local 222, which represents workers at GM plants in Oshawa.
He said that after all the retirements and buyouts, all those laid off by GM two years ago should get their jobs back, but the work force will still be only half of what it was before the Oshawa truck plant closed.
“It’s a dream of mine that we’ll get back to the employment levels that we’ve known for quite some time, but I don’t see that happening,” Buckley said.
