Russian President shows reporters example of “united future world currency”

In a highly symbolic moment at the G8 summit in Italy today, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev unveiled to reporters a coin representing a “united future world currency”.

“We are discussing both the use of other national currencies, including the ruble, as a reserve currency, as well as supranational currencies,” the Russian leader said at a news conference.

However, those who have downplayed the formulation of a world currency by dismissing it as merely a progression of SDR’s (Special Drawing Rights) and not something that would physically be used by citizens in a system of world government, were contradicted when Medvedev clearly outlined that the new currency would be “used for payment” by citizens as a “united future world currency”.

G8 Summit: Rich nations to pay green tab

Friday, July 10th, 2009

They really do mean to fully collapse the Western economies, destroy the middle class, and bind all nations together into a feudal world state with a global carbon tax under the pretext of saving the earth. If you’re concerned about climate change, take some initiative to reduce your own ‘footprint’ – the personal is the political. The real question is, will people wake up and take action to stop this encroaching tyranny now, or will it take the complete Sovietization of the culture, bread lines, and rioting before they look up from their televisions? We can’t even begin to appreciate how hard our ancestors had to fight to escape from bondage. Are we even up to the challenge?

U.S. shifts position on emissions, Obama says biggest polluters must take a lead role

L’AQUILA, Italy–The world’s industrialized nations will pay to help developing economies slash emissions in a bid to rescue a global deal on climate change.

U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged a deep split between rich and poor countries yesterday as critical meetings here ended in a stalemate over who should bear the burden of reducing greenhouse gases.

But he argued it doesn’t have to sink negotiations toward an international deal to halt global warming.

“While we don’t expect to solve this problem in one meeting or one summit, I believe we’ve made some important strides forward as we move towards Copenhagen,” said Obama.

Nationalized General Motors emerges from bankruptcy after 40 days

Friday, July 10th, 2009

The zombie we affectionately call Government Motors rises… it lives!

Flashback: Nationalized General Motors gets go ahead from US judge | Harper ‘not counting on’ recouping billions loaned to GM | ‘New GM’ to emerge from bankruptcy | US could own 69% of GM as bankruptcy looms

Andrew Clark, The Guardian

‘Business as usual is over at GM,’ said CEO Fritz Henderson

America’s biggest carmaker, General Motors, won a second chance to prove itself as a profitable motor manufacturer today as it emerged from bankruptcy at lightning speed after a remarkably swift, smooth financial restructuring.

After just 40 days under court-supervised protection from its creditors, GM was resurrected as a solvent business shortly after 6.30am when lawyers, completing an all-night paperwork session, signed over its factories, stocks, equipment and intellectual property to a new entity controlled by the US government.

GM’s chief executive, Fritz Henderson, pledged to pay back $50bn (£30.9bn) of public loans well in advance of a deadline of 2015 and promised that the streamlined company would be a nimbler, less bureaucratic and more decisive organisation. GM will focus on four vehicle brands – Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

Headed to National Socialism

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Inflammatory? Perhaps, but in light of recent events it’s hard to deny the ominous parallels. Naomi Wolfe, too, has identified the 10 common steps taken by ‘closing societies’ on their way to authoritarianism – invoke a terrifying external/internal enemy, create a gulag, set up a thug caste, set up a surveillance system, etc. We’ve been working our way down that checklist with fightening speed. Today, Lew Rockwell has written a challenging article that deserves to be seen and widely discussed, particularly in light of the nationalization of the auto sector: Nationalism and socialism both exist in our culture today. What would North America look like were they to fuse once more?

It was common on the left to intimate that George W. Bush was like Hitler, a remark that would drive the National Review crowd through the roof but which I didn’t find entirely outrageous. Bush’s main method of governance was to stir up fear of foreign enemies and instigate a kind of nationalist hysteria about the need for waging war and giving up liberty through security.

Hitler is the most famous parallel here, but he is hardly the only one. Many statesmen in world history have used the same tactics, dating back to ancient times. Machiavelli wrote in his Art of War advice to the ruler: “To know how to recognize an opportunity in war, and take it, benefits you more than anything else.”

RCMP pipeline bomber hunt draws harassment compliants, comparisons to secret police

An RCMP team hunting for the EnCana pipeline bomber in northeastern British Columbia has been accused of harassing and intimidating people in an attempt to get a break in the case.

Several residents of the Dawson Creek area say they have been interrogated up to eight times, pressured to take lie detector tests and asked for DNA and fingerprint samples.

One man said he fled a busy restaurant when police loudly accused him of being the bomber.

The RCMP say they have not received any formal complaints about their tactics.

But Vancouver lawyer, Jason Gratl, vice-president of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, said he has written to the RCMP asking them to stop harassing two clients.

Bisphenol A traces found in baby food: Health Canada

Friday, July 10th, 2009

BPA is an endocrine disruptor – an artificial hormone – which works at extremely low levels. Even if we accept Health Canada’s stated safe levels as fact (and past incidents have pointed to a massive conflict of interest in their relationship with industry), the point isn’t to focus on the exposure from one product, but on the long term chronic exposure levels to the stuff. Baby food, plastic bottles, pthalates in plastic baby toys, and a host of other products. As this journal has covered in the past, scientists have known of the similarity between this substance and estrogen since the 1930s – so why is this only coming out now?

Health Canada says it has found bisphenol A in baby foods sold in glass jars with metal lids but says the level is “extremely low and poses no health or safety concerns.”

The department found that among the products it tested where bisphenol A could be quantified, about 70 per cent had levels of less than one part per billion. That’s well below the limit of 600 parts per billion set by a directive for bisphenol A (BPA) in food.

In a survey posted on its website Thursday, Health Canada also said its testing found low levels in some 18.5-litre polycarbonate bottles of drinking water.

BPA is used to make epoxy resins in the protective linings on the inside of metal lids and containers. The linings prevent corrosion of the metal and contamination.
