MacKay dismisses Taliban threat as ‘propaganda’

The latest Taliban threats against Canada are nothing more than propaganda designed to turn the Canadian population against the war in Afghanistan, Defence Minister Peter MacKay says.
“We take any threat seriously, but let’s be frank — this is a very insidious and deceptive piece of propaganda,” he told reporters in Winnipeg on Sunday.
The Taliban posted a letter on the internet late last week, telling Canadians to pressure their government to withdraw Canada’s troops from Afghanistan and follow a neutral policy in the wartorn country. If withdrawal doesn’t happen, the Taliban said it would be obliged to kill more Canadian nationals.
The letter was written as Canadians were coping with the death of two Canadian aid workers in the eastern Afghanistan province of Logar. Jacqueline Kirk of Montreal and Shirley Case of Williams Lake, B.C. were shot dead on Aug. 13, along with Trinidadian-American aid worker Nicole Dial and the group’s Afghan driver, Mohammad Aimal.
“Events such as Logar will happen again,” the letter said. “The Afghans did not go to Canada to kill Canadians. Rather it is the Canadians who came to Afghanistan to kill and torture the Afghans to please the fascist regime of America.”
MacKay said the violent nature of the threat isn’t surprising, given the “type of tactics that the Taliban use.”
“As a terrorist organization, they target innocent aid workers, their own civilians, and they are involved in some of the worst forms of violence that we’ve seen,” he said.
“We’re not going to be intimidated quite frankly.”
About 2,500 Canadian soldiers are serving in Afghanistan, most in the dangerous south. Ninety Canadian soldiers have been killed since the mission began in 2002.
